The Inspiration Behind the Martin-Barbour Veterinary Technology Endowed Scholarship
For decades, Joan Martin and Jeff Barbour have called Gaston County home and have actively supported the community. Their passion for helping others shows in their love for animals, especially cats, and their commitment to student education.
Throughout their lives, they have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact scholarships can create, opening doors of opportunity and helping individuals achieve their goals, no matter the size of the institution
Initially, the couple set their sights on establishing a scholarship at a larger school, but everything changed the day they learned about Gaston’s Veterinary Medical Technology program. Supporting students right here at home felt more meaningful as they realized their gift could have a lasting impact in the community.
“We see how important vet techs are firsthand,” Martin said. “It’s a special gift to be able to be kind, and to have that skill set with all different kinds of animals, because you don’t know what you’ll be dealing with.”
The Martin-Barbour Veterinary Technology Endowed Scholarship was created with hard-working, caring students in mind. It’s designed for those who bring both sharp minds and gentle hands to their studies, caring deeply for animals of every shape and size. Martin and Barbour hope each recipient grows in both knowledge and compassion, carrying those qualities into their careers.
“It requires a great deal of commitment and time, intellect, and energy to be able to get good grades,” Martin said. “So, that’s what we expect for the people who have the scholarship to do a good job with it.”
With this scholarship, Martin and Barbour hope students can focus more on learning, growing, and reaching their goals, instead of carrying the heavy weight of financial worries. They want recipients to have the freedom and confidence to put time into their education.
Looking ahead, the couple dreams of seeing the Veterinary Medical Technology program thrive, and with it, a new generation of caring, skilled graduates ready to serve the community. They hope their scholarship will grow alongside the program, opening more doors for students for years to come.
