The Remembering Austin Annual Scholarship
Established by Mr. Nazrul & Mrs. Tammy Chowdhury in 2018 in memory of their son, Austin Chowdhury, the purpose of this annual scholarship award is to provide financial assistance for a promising student from Gaston or Lincoln County who wishes to earn an Associate of Science degree in Human Services Technology with a focus on Substance Abuse.
Austin Chowdhury’s light shone brightly but was extinguished far too soon due to the battle faced by many in our community today, opioid addiction. Austin’s addiction can be traced to oral surgery when he was a teenager while living in a loving and supportive home, and attending high school in Gaston County. Even in the midst of addiction he was fully functioning and successfully continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Urban Planning. Known as someone with a huge heart that would do anything for his friends, he hid his personal struggle with addiction from those who loved him most. To continue Austin’s intended legacy of leaving this world a better place, his parents Tammy and Nazrul seek to educate their community about the illness of addiction so other families may avoid the pain and sorrow their son’s untimely death has caused them. Additional information about Austin and the Chowdhury’s drive to educate others about the perils of opioid use, can be found at http://www.rememberingaustin.org.

The purpose of this designated endowment fund is to provide financial assistance for a student who is a graduate of the Gaston College Adult High School or who has attained a high school equivalency degree at Gaston College (formerly known as the GED). Margaret “Mary Jo” Cloninger was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, business and civic leader who founded one of Gaston County’s most iconic and successful businesses, Mary Jo’s Cloth Store, in 1951 on her 19th
She spent much of her teenage years working behind the register of her father’s family grocery store, and was pulled out of high school before graduation to work full-time. As a child she would sneak away to her mother’s sewing machine, gathering cotton scraps and stitching them together. She was a Depression Era baby and learned that to waste not was to want not. By the time she was married, she came up with a business idea which she pitched to her father. Armed with a $500 loan, which had to be co-signed by a male since women in business was unheard of at that time, she rented space in the back of her father’s barber shop to sell cloth to women who made clothing for their families. Because of her keen business acumen, Ms. Cloninger grew her fabric business of necessity into a specialty niche market selling specifically to other women. Named for the visionary entrepreneur who founded the company, Mary Jo’s is now a nationally and internationally known enterprise selling sought after fabrics to home makers and designers in all fifty states and numerous foreign countries.
Mary Jo Cloninger was a shrewd and successful businesswoman during a time when the world of business was considered to be for men only. She overcame a lack of formal education and public perception of what a woman’s role should be to create a sprawling and iconic Gaston County business that has given back to its community for over 66 years. Her legacy of hard work, determination, commitment to family and a love for her community is cherished.
