Gaston College Welcomes New Chief Development Officer

Gaston College Welcomes New Chief Development Officer

Dan FreemanGaston College is excited to announce Daniel Freeman as the new Chief Development Officer for the Gaston College Foundation. With a background in higher education and strong connections to the local community, Freeman brings a wealth of experience and passion to this role.

Freeman’s journey to Gaston College is as diverse as it is impressive. Originally from Warwick, R.I., he found his way to the Charlotte area as a student-athlete at UNC Charlotte. His athletic ability in track and field, particularly in javelin and shot put, brought him to the region in 2010. In fact, Freeman’s javelin throw of 65.63 meters at the 2014 Conference USA Outdoor Championships still stands as a UNC Charlotte school record.

A Commitment to Accessible Education

Freeman’s dedication to education is evident in his academic achievements and professional experience. He holds degrees from universities in North Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee, including a doctorate in Global Sport Leadership from East Tennessee State University.

When asked about his new role at Gaston College, Freeman expressed his enthusiasm: “Accessible education is very important to my personal and professional values. I was really interested in a school that promoted the trades and workforce development and continuing education.”

He added, “So, to me, this role is a perfect mix for what I want to do in education. I think people are starting to see the value a community college provides to a community and the region.”

A Diverse Background in Higher Education

Freeman’s career path has taken him through various roles in higher education, including:

  • UNC Charlotte Athletic Development
  • UNC Asheville Athletic Development
  • Drexel University – Lebow College of Business and School of Education
  • George Mason University – College of Education and Human Development

This diverse experience has given Freeman a comprehensive view of the higher education landscape. “I’ve been at a small, public liberal arts school, I’ve been at a large private school and I’ve been at two large public universities,” he noted. “That’s allowed me to see a lot of the higher education landscape.”

A Focus on Support and Growth

Freeman’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for the college and the community we serve. With his extensive experience, he’ll be looking to make an impact by building alumni relations and college support and is clear about his objectives: “My main focus will be in creating support for Gaston College as a whole.”
